Cook Inlet Tops Its Forecast at 111 Percent

Cook Inlet reached 111 percent of forecast this week, driven by a sockeye harvest up 317.7 percent week over week to 969K fish. Statewide, reds are at 85 percent of the 44.1M fish forecast.

Statewide, ADF&G's Blue Sheet shows 77.5 million fish harvested through August 21, 65 percent of the 119.9 million fish commercial-comparable forecast. Sockeye (reds) stand at 37.5 million fish, 85 percent of the 44.1 million fish forecast. Cook Inlet drove the week, with the district's cumulative sockeye harvest rising from 232K to 969K fish, a 317.7 percent week-over-week gain that pushed Cook Inlet to 111 percent of its forecast.

  • Cook Inlet: 1.17 million fish, 111 percent of forecast (1.06 million fish forecast). Sockeye at 969K fish, up 317.7 percent week over week from 232K fish a week ago. Chum (dogs) at 86K fish, up 120.5 percent week over week from 39K fish.
  • Bristol Bay: 30.0 million fish, 92 percent of the 32.9 million fish sockeye forecast, as the Bay's reds move into their August wind-down.
  • Kodiak: 13.5 million fish, 90 percent of forecast (15.0 million fish). Pink (humpies) reached 11.7 million fish, up 61.0 percent week over week from 7.28 million fish. McKinley Research Group's August 18 ASMI update reports Kodiak's cumulative pink harvest is up 63 percent from the 2024 benchmark and has reached ADF&G's forecasted harvest range for the season.
  • Southeast Alaska pink: 12.4 million fish, up 31.1 percent week over week from 9.50 million fish. ADF&G's August 21 inseason summary says the season is on track to meet the 19 million fish forecast despite a historically slow start.
  • Prince William Sound: 16 percent of forecast, the furthest behind of the tracked districts. Coho (silvers) at 68K fish, up 580.0 percent week over week from 10K fish a week ago. Pink at 2.40 million fish, up 60.3 percent week over week from 1.50 million fish.
  • Alaska Peninsula pink: 3.02 million fish, up 28.8 percent week over week from 2.34 million fish.

August is pink and chum month: sockeye are winding down across the state and Kodiak and Southeast enhanced pink harvests are peaking. ADF&G's August 21 inseason summary notes a second Chinook (kings) retention period opened in Southeast troll areas August 13, targeting approximately 33,000 fish, with specific areas and timing managed by emergency order.
